WINNIPEG – Steady rain and drizzle was not enough to dampen the spirits of dozens of cyclists who took part in the second annual Bike-B-Q Fun Ride on Saturday, August 28. Riders young and old braved the wet streets on brightly decorated bikes in a parade from Northgate Shopping Centre to Kildonan Park where they joined friends and supporters for a Filipino barbecue. Organized by Mike Pagtakhan, Winnipeg City Councillor for Point Douglas, in cooperation with Filipino Youth Initiative (FYI) and the Pilipino Express, the theme of this year’s parade of bicycles was “Be Proud of Your Flags.”

“The event is a celebration of fellowship, camaraderie, family togetherness, unity and friendship as expressed though biking. This is also in line with my commitment to promote biking as an effective alternative method of active transportation,” said Pagtakhan.

Several community organizations participated in the parade and barbecue, including the Association of Ilocanos in Manitoba (AIM), the Bacoor Association of Manitoba, the Davao Association of Manitoba, North American Basketball Association (NABA), the Pangasinan Group of Manitoba, Samahan ng Taguig sa Winnipeg and Team Pacquiao.

Many unaffiliated families and individuals, such as Kevin Lamoureux, the Liberal candidate for Winnipeg North MP, Winnipeg mayoral candidate Judy Wasylycia-Leis, and NDP Candidate for Inkster MLA, Amity Sagness, also joined in the fun ride and barbecue, lending their support.

Eleven prizes were awarded for the best decorated bicycles at the event. Contest judges Maureen Cruz-Gabuna, Bahandi Gabuna and Richard Cuevas of FYI along with Rey-ar Reyes of the Pilipino Expressawarded the Grand Prize of a Giant brand mountain bike – provided by NDP candidate for Winnipeg North MP, Kevin Chief – to young Rosemarie Tamondong, daughter of Ryan and Beverly Tamondong.

Councillor Pagtakhan thanked all the participants in the Bike-B-Q Funride 2010 as well as the generous sponsors who supplied the food, prizes and services – Aristocrat Restaurant, Bikes and Beyond, Kevin Chief, Discovery Bakery, Myrna’s Café, Pampanga Restaurant, Randy Viray Financial, Myra Rosario, Winnipeg Police Service & Young’s Trading.
