“All together we can be as one.” This has got to be one of my favourite lines from the Zumba song, “Be As One.”

And unity was evident among the participants of the recently held Zumbayanihan sa Winnipeg on September 9. Everyone from different backgrounds and influences came together in support of the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba. Zumba instructors and participants were one as they moved and grooved for a good cause. Familiar faces to the fitness program happily mingled with people new to Zumba.

The one-and-a-half Zumba master class was also a great way to promote health and wellness.

Zumbayanihan was a truly meaningful event for me, as it was like a celebration for my first year anniversary as a member of Zumba® Instructors Network (ZIN), last September 2.

It has been a wonderful journey so far, with a lot of interesting twists and turns. Zumba has given me more than an outlet for my passion for dancing. It gave me an opportunity to help and inspire others to be more physically active and thereby be more mindful of their health. I have had students tell me that because of attending regular Zumba classes, they are able to maintain their blood sugar levels and keep bad cholesterol at bay. For others who were hesitant to try the fitness program because they think they only have left feet, I tell them there are only “happy feet” in Zumba. Some look forward to class because of newfound friends. Zumba connects people in such a special way.

I feel so blessed to have found a niche in the dynamic world of Zumba. And I am grateful to my family and friends who have encouraged and supported me since the beginning of my journey until now.

And to all who helped in so many different ways to make our first Zumbaynihan sa Winnipeg a success, Maraming salamat po!

“How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!” (Psalms 133:1)
