    A sad love story

Some say it was because he was feeling guilty and shameful for conniving with other AFP officials to steal money from the military coffers. On the other hand, friends and admirers say he was honourable until the end for not squealing on anybody. Still others say he was plainly a coward who couldn’t take the heat.

My two cents? He did it for the love of his family.

According to the on-going Senate investigation on the alleged corruption in the military, it was impossible for Reyes not to know what was happening at the AFP because he was the head of the Department of National Defense at the time.

If Reyes had followed the dictates of his conscience and admitted the truth of the allegations, his beloved family would have been in danger. If he continued to live and deny, there would have been no peace for him and his family.

The “foremost nature of an Army soldier,” according to the Philippine Army Core Philosophy (2.1), is to put country before family. In the end, Reyes chose to love his family more than his country.
