ANCOP walk raises more than $14,000 |
On the morning of Saturday, August 21, organizers and supporters gathered in Assiniboine Park to participate in the annual ANCOP (Answering the Cry of the Poor) Walk. ANCOP International Canada Incorporated is a global organization geared towards battling the fight against poverty in the Philippines and other developing countries. ANCOP’s philosophy revolves around the principle of teaching a man to fish as oppose to giving a man a fish. ANCOP realizes that permanent poverty reduction lays in such things as values formation and livelihood initiatives. Simply giving a disadvantaged family a home is meaningless if they aren’t afforded the opportunity to learn how to provide for themselves and one another.
Similarly, ANCOP inhabits the bayanihan spirit of neighbour helping neighbour, community helping community. In many cases, the beneficiaries of ANCOP go on to help build neighbouring ANCOP villages and communities. The grassroots approach to poverty reduction is the model that this organization takes great pride in as they aspire to realize their larger dream of nation building.
Eligio Minglana, ANCOP Walk Event Coordinator said, “I am proud and honoured to be part of such a wonderful organization. There is nothing more rewarding than being able to help our fellow kababayans in the Philippines and all around the world in this most special way.”
On top of housing and infrastructure, ANCOP also provides options for individual child sponsorships, medical missions and educational sponsorships.
This year’s ANCOP walk raised in excess of $14,000, which brings 2010’s fundraising total to $45,000 as of August.
“I would like to especially thank the Transcona Rotary Club, Larry Vickar, for sharing the Vickar Jeepney, as well all the organizers and supporters who have been with us for the past 7 years.
A special congratulation goes to long-time supporter, Terry Villanueva, who won 1st prize for the most amount of money raised by an individual ($2,100). Thank you,” said Vic Lopez, ANCOP Manitoba Director.
