Union Station, Toronto, ON – Dear Diary, let me start off by saying that I am writing this while sitting on a bench in one of the ever-so-busy underground subway stations in Toronto. The inspiration for this article came while I was observing the scenery and situations that unfolded before my eyes.
Let me tell you something about these underground subway stations: it gets pretty hectic! Everyone always seems like they are in their own world and in a hurry to get to their destination. In fact, it is rare that anyone would actually take a seat on any of the benches so I am definitely sticking out in this crowd like a sore thumb. Fortunately for me, I have a day off and therefore I am in no hurry today. Some might even say that I have the “luxury” to sit down.
As I sit here, I am reminded of how chaotic life can get. If we are not careful, we can get too caught up in the busyness. Have you ever experienced overworking yourself? If you have, you know just how much that can take a toll on your health and overall wellbeing. Also, being too busy carries the potential to negatively affect our relationships with the people around us.
When we are too focused on getting from “point A” to “point B” we forget to enjoy the journey. “Life is what happens when you are busy making other plans.” – John Lennon
For example, right now at the other end of this room, there is a swarm of people walking around like they have tunnel vision; they seem to overlook the young girl who is lost and trying to find her mom in the crowd. Her mom is at the other end of the room calling her name. As people are opening the door to enter or leave the subway station grounds, I rarely see anyone holding the door for the person behind them because they are in such a rush. There are some buskers who are playing some incredibly beautiful live music and yet people walk by with their headphones in their ears. It is quite the scene, I tell ya.
I wish I could press the pause button for everyone here just to remind them to enjoy all the wonders that are going on around them, to stop and help their neighbour, and most important – to remind them to breathe!
I have always been an encourager of productivity and working hard, however, we should never be too busy to take care of ourselves and those around us. Once in a while, we must press that pause button to re-evaluate our lives and our priorities. It is not a waste of time to stop, take three deep breaths, and then proceed. There is so much beauty packed in each day and it would be a shame to miss it. Now excuse me as I try to leave this subway station by not getting run over by the hustle and bustle.
With love,
Yvanne.
