Under John Gano’s leadership, the Knights of Rizal in cooperation with several communities and associations in Winnipeg celebrated Seniors Month in October. The valuable contributions of seniors were recognized in cultural presentations and a free seminar on oral health on October 26, 2013 with the Filipino Canadian Seniors Association (FILCASA).
This year Shanlee Spence and her chanter/drummer treated the seniors to an Aboriginal Hoop Dance. The audience was awestruck by the grace and seemingly magical moves Shanlee performed with the hoops. The FILCASA Dancers country and western line dancing equally impressed the audience.
Milli Khan talked about the services that Peer Helpers provides to the seniors in abusive relationships and introduced the trained Peer Helper Volunteers.
Esther Tran from the Addiction Foundation Manitoba (AFM) informed the participants on programs that AFM provides for free in preventing gambling addiction.
Mr. Dave Schellinger, Chairperson of the Manitoba Council on Aging, spoke about the functions of the Council within the Manitoba Government and the services they provide.
The participants also learned a lot about proper dental and denture care during presentations and a question and answer session with Dr. Tom Colina, KCR DMD and Dr. Khalida Hai-Santiago DMD.
Our good and generous Dr. Tom Colina donated and raffled off gift certificates and a toothbrush kit that can almost clean as good as dentist can. He also gave away a toothbrush to every participant.
