The Philippine Nurses Association of Manitoba (PNAM) hosted a special symposium on August 31 at Cancer Care Manitoba. The keynote speaker was Dr. Josefina A. Tuazon, Dean of the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Nursing.

The seminar served to advocate for the ethical recruitment and improved working conditions for Filipino nurses being employed outside the Philippines. Dr. Tuazon said that, “UP’s philosophy is ‘not to encourage our alumni to go abroad per se,’ but should Filipinos go abroad, we’d rather they have good placements and not be exploited.”

Speakers from the local nursing community who also talked about their respective journeys as Filipino nurses were Crisanta Gomez, Annabelle Duaban, Marilyn Flores and Maria (Kelly) Legaspi.
